Braiding & Crochet Hair FAQ

Braiding & Crochet Hair FAQ

Welcome to Jasmine's Beauty Connections! Whether you're new to braids or a seasoned pro, we want to help you get the right hair for your look. Below are answers to our most frequently asked questions.

How many packs of hair do I need?

This is our most common question — and honestly, there's no single answer that works for everyone. The right pack count depends on several factors:

  • Head size – Larger heads generally require more hair to achieve full coverage.
  • Natural hair density – If your natural hair is thick and dense, you may need fewer packs; fine or thin hair may need more for a seamless blend.
  • Desired fullness – A voluminous, full look requires more hair than a sleek, close-to-the-scalp style.
  • Braid or loc size – Larger braids use more hair per section, while smaller, micro-sized braids may use less per braid but more overall due to the higher number of sections.
  • Hair length – Longer styles typically require more hair to maintain consistent thickness from root to tip.

General starting points (individual results will vary):

  • Box braids (medium size): 5–8 packs
  • Knotless braids (medium size): 6–9 packs
  • Crochet styles: 4–7 packs depending on the texture and fullness desired
  • Micro braids or feed-in styles: may require 8+ packs

These ranges are estimates only. We always recommend purchasing one or two extra packs from the same dye lot to ensure a consistent color match, just in case you need more.

What's the difference between braiding hair and crochet hair?

Braiding hair is typically used by a stylist or yourself to braid your natural hair with extensions attached using a braiding technique, such as box braids, knotless braids, or cornrows.

Crochet hair is pre-looped or pre-twisted hair that is attached to cornrowed natural hair using a crochet needle. It's a popular protective style option because it tends to be faster to install and is available in a wide variety of textures.

Does hair density affect how many packs I need?

Yes — significantly. Thick, high-density natural hair provides more of a base for the braiding hair to hold onto and blend with, so you may need fewer packs. On the other hand, if your natural hair is fine or low-density, you may need additional packs to achieve a look that appears full and even from roots to ends.

Will braid size change the pack count?

Absolutely. Larger braids use more hair per section, so a full head of jumbo box braids will likely require more hair per braid — but fewer braids overall. Smaller or micro braids use less hair per braid but require far more braids to cover the entire head, which can add up quickly in total pack count.

What about hair length?

Longer styles typically need more hair to keep the braid or style looking consistently thick and full from the root all the way to the tip. A waist-length style will almost always require more packs than a shoulder-length version of the same style.

Should I buy extra packs?

We recommend it! Hair from the same dye lot will have a consistent color match. If you run out mid-install and purchase a different batch later, there can be subtle color variations. Having one or two extra packs on hand saves you from that frustration.
